BROMPTON ELECTRIC UPGRADES - UPDATED

Updated on 21st March 2022: Brompton Electric Upgrades - official programme to repair mudguards.

At the end of 2021 we initiated a process of upgrading all Brompton Electric bikes with two important design upgrades, developed after capturing customer feedback.

Since this action, we have received reports of issues with the mudguard on some Brompton Electric bikes which has resulted in injury. All incidents have occurred with bikes that have not been fitted with the new mudguard upgrade.

What is the problem?

In specific circumstances if an object of a certain size becomes trapped between the bike’s mudguard stay and tyre, it can result in the mudguard getting caught on the tyre, and the bike’s wheel rotation becoming inhibited or stopping suddenly.

Although the risk of an accident occurring is low, we have now begun a programme to repair all affected bikes as part of an official recall, and we ask all Brompton Electric owners to book a free upgrade appointment as soon as they can.

Which bikes are affected?

Only Electric bikes require the repair, but customers who have already had a new mudguard stay and battery catch fitted in the Brompton Electric Upgrades Programme do not need to have a new mudguard stay fitted.

An easy way to spot if the bike has been upgraded is by following the guide below.

What is the upgrade?

Customers getting the upgrade will have a new mudguard stay fitted, which increases clearance between the mudguard and tyre.

Additionally, we will fit a new battery catch that reduces the movement between the battery and the bike. This minimises battery disconnections when riding over uneven surfaces, prolonging the life of the electronics and improving ride experience.

How can you get the upgrade?

You can get an upgrade to your Brompton Electric by booking an upgrade appointment with your local Brompton Junction or Brompton Electric Accredited Retailer. Find your closest store and contact them directly to make this appointment.
